Osberta Birdie Stead Harris was an extraordinary woman who lived an exceptional life. She was an inspiration to me as an Aunt and as a woman, wife and mother. Not only was she was personally driven and accomplished in her own right, becoming a Registered Nurse as a young woman, later on as a Mother and Aunt ; she was a strong advocate for Education, encouraging her children, her nephews and nieces (including myself) to always strive to be their best and do their best. She had refined and impeccable taste in clothing, style and manners who always taught me to present yourself appropriately in public or in your personal life. She was also very strong and deeply convicted, she was not afraid to stand up to what she perceived was wrong or injustice. She was legendary as a hostess, always going the extra mile for her guests. Once her children were grown, she dedicated herself to her church and others. Yet my fondest memories of Aunt Birdie are personal remembrances, she never forgot a Birthday or Achievement, even the youngest family member received a card and a gift to commemorate their event or how kind, thoughtful and hospitable to everyone, even the youngest guest (when you went to visit her). I will miss her but am humbled that I had an opportunity to know her.
To Steve/Marina (Cosette and Evan), Eric/Aisha, Family (Stead, Harris and the Langston families all our many cousins and relatives) and Friends, please accept my sincere condolences. Know that you are in my thoughts not only today for this occasion but daily.

My Dearest Aunt Birdie:

The time has come when God put the light out on you for final rest... I am trying to understand this all. The old folks keep saying that death is a part of life but it truly does hurt! I am never ever ready to say good-bye.
You will now have eternal rest as I know you were never afraid to go into the light. I heard you speak of this my whole life... Your strong faith kept this comfortable thought in your mind..... You loved your church home and family (Union Baptist on Main Street) despite challenges and debates at times... Lots of members wanted to be sure anytime a church meeting was called, They wanted you present!! LOL. The Church knew they would receive a more than honest opinion or thought from you... No pretending or sugar coating a thing!!!
I truly admired this about you... Never phony, always real, always walked proud, always dressed to the nine! Never begging anyone for a thing!, Always pushing family to excel and dream higher and higher.... There are so so so many fond memories and thoughts throughout my entire 50 years. All the birthday gifts, Xmas gifts, outings to cookouts, Salem Willows, Broadway plays, holiday meals, the memories just go on and on and of coarse the many many laugh's and sometime arguments. I could go on for hours my dearest Aunt Birdie when it comes to you....
You knew how much I loved you so, and you can believe I surely knew how much you loved me and my siblings and my Mom......
I wish we could go back 30 to 40 years and re-live some of these times, eat some of those delicious sandwiches your made and that brown rice.... I am sure there are many who have fond memories just like me about their Special Aunt... The may thank you's which are owed to you from me......
I can have a small amount of comfort knowing that your gone to be with Uncle Roland, Uncle Charlie and Mommy Elenore, Cousin Kevin and many many many others's I hope when you see them all and especially Uncle Charlie, you give them a big hug and kiss from me....
I will always take great pride in the examples you taught me, your strength, your pride, your sharpness, your great English skills and very important, your color matching...... You pushed me to get my son into private schools and sailing camp and just tons and tons of life lessons....
Till we meet again rest on My Beautiful Aunt Birdie...
I am so Glad I had you these past 50 yrs

Your neice-Leslie
