Uda Clarke Obituary

Uda May Clarke
Aka Mama, Mom, Aunt Sissy, Miss Sissy, Sis and Momma Sis.

Mrs. Uda Clarke was born on July 28, 1940 in Cottage Salt Spring St. James, in the island of Jamaica. She was the daughter of the late Ebgert Campbell and the late Jane Barrett.  She was the 2nd of 7 children.  Uda attended the Salt Spring Baptist School until her matriculation in 1955.

She met and fell in love with Rupert Clarke and on December 28, 1956 Uda and Rupert were joined together in holy matrimony.  Together they produced 10 children, Easton Clarke, Frederick Clarke, Marcia Gayle, Marvia Clarke (deceased), Maria Shakes, Renrick Clarke, Dalton Clarke, Marva  Durand, Garfield Clarke and Robert Clarke.

Uda stayed home with all of her children until the youngest was 8 years old. She was the disciplinarian of the family.  Her children once believed that spanking was her favorite hobby.  Her spankings were coupled with lifelong lessons that has shaped her children until today. Some of her lessons were “If you do not hear, you will feel”.  “From a pin to a greater thing” ,” work before pleasure”  and “children should never let angry passion rise,  because their little hands were never made to tear each other’s eyes”.

In 1979, Uda and Rupert migrated to the United States and settled in Cambridge Massachusetts.  She was employed at the Baxter Healthcare Corporation in the Clinical Assays Division until she retired in 1989.  After retiring, Uda spent a number of years spending quality times with her many grandchildren including entire summers in Jamaica.

She was a prayer warrior in her own rights.  Countless hours were spent agonizing with God over her health, as well as praying for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Uda - Miss Sissy was a very kind, gentle, caring and quiet woman.  She would make sure that she shared whatever she had with others which was often done in the most unpretentious style possible.  She never neglected her friends but  connect with them on a regular basis.  Her unconditional love extends far and wide and was a favorite aunt for a lot of her nieces and nephews.  Her hugs were tenacious and invulnerable.

Uda was diagnosed with Diabetes and later developed hypertension.  She was placed on dialysis approximately 11 years ago as her disease progressed.  Her health continued to decline and in 2018 she suffered a mild stroke and a mild heart attack.  On June 26, 2019 she was rushed to the hospital because of her illness.  Although she was experiencing severe pain, she was still able to pray her final prayer, repeated the 23rd Psalm, petitioned the throne of mercy, hugged her 3 wonderful daughters but unfortunately she succumbed to her illness.

Mrs. Uda May Clarke is survived by her husband of 62 + years Rupert Clarke, daughters Marcia Gayle (Everton Sr), Maria Shakes (Eric Sr) and Marva Durand (Rodney Sr); sons Easton Clarke (Audrey), Frederick Clarke (Gail), Renrick Clarke (Helena), Dalton Clarke (Lavern), Garfield Clarke (Felicia) and Robert Clarke (Nichole).  Her surviving siblings are brother: Douglas Campbell, sisters: Eudell Campbell- Jackson, Jacinta Smith, Veronica Campbell, and Utella Campbell.  Her legacy will be sustained by 26 grandchildren and 9 Great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by innumerable Nephews, Nieces other relatives and a host of friends.  She was a woman of God, a loving wife to her husband Rupert, a loving mother, Grandmother, Great-grand mother, sister, aunt and friend
