Robert Carter passed away on September 19, 2023 in Everett, MA.
Robert was born August 1, 1945 in South Carolina. Shortly after his birth, his family settled in Cambridge, where Robert remained for most of his life. Though his life took him to various parts of Greater Boston, he was a Cantabrigian through and through.
He grew up in a musical household and harbored a lifelong love of music, a passion he always shared with others. He was as hard-working as he was good-natured, and counted friends from all walks of life. Robert was a card-carrying member of IUOE Local 4 for over 40 years, and continued to be active in union business after his retirement in 2010. He was proud to be an operating engineer, and helped build countless buildings around Boston, including some that shaped the city’s modern skyline. Gaze upon the skyscraper at 111 Huntington Ave, and you’ll see an indelible trace of his legacy.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother Lilian Dinkins Carter, his father Frederick Douglas Carter; brothers Fred Jr., Gene, Earl, Leroy, and Joseph Russell; and his wife, Regina.
Robert is survived by his sister Rosalie (Joy) Carter King, brother Henry (Bud) Carter; children Robert, Jr., Michelle, Nicole, Ingrid, Christina, and Randall; grandchildren Alanna, Alisa, Alexis, Aliyah, and Elle; and great-grandchildren Nelson and Noah.
To celebrate Robert’s life, a memorial service will be held on Friday, October 20th at 4 p.m., at AJ Spears Funeral Home, 124 Western Ave in Cambridge.
