A Living Testimony: Deacon, teacher, singer, father, husband, grandfather, hardworking family man, businessman, community visionary, and much, much, more.

Quintus Ervin McDermott, beloved son of the late Wiley Sr. and Rosa (Miller) McDermott, was born March 22, 1936 in Chattanooga, TN. In the early 1970s was introduced to Barbara Gene (Plunkett) McDermott of Cambridge, MA by his younger sister, Marcella. Soon after, he relocated to Cambridge were he and Barbara were married. They were married for 42 wonderful and loving years. Their love for each other and their devoted union resulted in a blended family consisting of 8 children, 20 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

Quintus was a long-time member of Union Baptist Church of Cambridge, MA for over 50 years. He was ordained a Deacon in January of 1978. In addition, Quintus was very active in ministry including the Adult Sunday School Ministry, New Members class, the Finance Board, the Men's Fellowship, and multiple church choirs.

Quintus and Barbara owned and operated the Duraclean McDermott Specialist franchise, a residential and commercial carpet and upholstery cleaning service, from 1977 to 2015. In his leisure time, Quintus enjoyed being with family and friends, camping, watching western movies, listening to music, singing in the church choir, and working on his business equipment.

Quintus is predeceased in death by his parents, Wiley Sr. and Rosa McDermott, his wife Barbara Gene, daughter Deborah McDermott Seales, brother Wiley McDermott Jr., sister Cynthia Ann "Marcella," stepbrother James Clay, and stepson Howard Plunkett. He is survived by his son and daughters, Ervin McDermott Jr. (Teresa) of Silverdale, WA; Denise McDermott Wagner (Kenneth) of Cleveland, OH; and Belinda McDermott of Cleveland, OH. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ayoka Stewart whom he and his wife Barbara lovingly raised from an early age and Katrina McDermott Bishop, Monkisha McDermott, Monroe McDermott, Nickia Newman, Ervin McDermott III, Christina Seales, Sierra McDermott, Ariel McDermott, Joseph McDermott, and Matthew Hill. In addition, he leaves to mourn his loss a stepdaughter, Cheryl Ann Hill (Chester) of Durham, NC; goddaughter and loving, caring, and devoted caregiver Deidre Travis Brown (Jeffrey) of Dorchester, MA; as well as loving, caring, and devoted caregivers: sister-in-law Francine Boykin (Monte) of Woburn, MA and nephew Ronald Bowden (Kimberly) of Methuen, MA. He also leaves to mourn a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many relatives near and far.
