Maria Brissett Obituary

Maria Brissett was born Maria Allen to Hubert Allen and Bernetta Campbell in the Parish of St. James, Montego Bay, Jamaica on July 28th, 1934. Maria had 3 sisters, Pearline Wyzard (deceased), Linda Allen and a twin who died at birth, and 3 brothers, Joselyn Jennings, George Allen and Ezra Allen.

At the tender age of 26, Maria met her husband Horace Brissett. This marriage produced two amazing children, Mark and Jennifer. Even though the marriage did not last forever she kept the last name for her children's sake. Young Maria Brissett now left alone with two babies moved in with her sister Pearline. Maria now in a home not built for 3 adults and 6 kids looked for a place of her own. Maria had a friend named Ms. Gwen who lived in Cambridge, MA who told Maria to come with her two kids. Maria packed up and moved from Brooklyn, NY to Cambridge, MA.

Maria lived in Cambridge, MA for many years and made sure her kids had everything they needed. Maria was notorious for throwing her son Mark birthday parties at her home. No Chuck E. Cheese, just all his friends from school and she would bake the cake. She spent a lot of time with her daughter Jennifer as they went everywhere together. Maria did the best she could with her children and was able to live long enough to see her only grandchild Marcel Brissett. Maria was very proud of her grandson and often reflected back when they used to sing nursery rhymes together, “The wheels on the bus go round and round” was a favorite. Maria moved to Florida in the early 2000’s, again with her sister Pearline. Maria eventually moved into her own apartment on Aaron street in Port Chester, Florida.

Maria worked for many years as a nurses aide and last work at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the research dept. Maria’s memory will live on through her children Mark Brissett, Jennifer Brissett- Wisner and grandson Marcel Brissett. Maria has left us with an everlasting appreciation for human connection as she would always remind her son that no man is an island.
