Maggie “Maudell” Soones, of Cambridge MA, peacefully passed away at the age of 100 on Monday, December 7, 2020. Maudell was born December 29, 1919 in Waldo Florida to Henry Wanton Jr and Lucy Ann Mitchell and was the fourth of seven children.

Maudell married Claude Jefferson “CJ” Soones, also of Florida, in 1944. It was after Claude’s WWII army service that the family migrated north to Fort Devens, Ayer Massachusetts and eventually settled in their life-long Soden Street home. Having left the racial segregation of the South, they wanted a better life for their family and believed that access to a good education for their children would make that possible. Family and faith meant everything to Maudell who raised five children and was a long-term guardian for her sister Evelyn. Grounded in her faith, Maudell was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where the family legacy continues.

Maudell, was employed as an electronic assembler at Raytheon, KLH and Advent Corporation.  Nearing retirement, Maudell worked at MIT as a cashier where she loved talking with students. Although she loved Cambridge, Maudell still remained a “country girl” with a real kind heart.

Maudell is predeceased by Claude, her loving husband of 71 years. She is survived by brother Henry Wanton III of Chicago, Aunt Zelma Watson of Florida and Maudell’s children Claude Soones Jr. (Kathleen), Howard Soones, Dr. Linda S Miles, Henry Soones (Patrice), and Carol Soones Ross. The family has been blessed with 10 grandchildren (Stephen, Stephanie, Gregory, Tacara, Michael, Lindsay, Bradford, Shannon, Gareth and Phillip) and 18 great-grandchildren. Maudell was also loved by a host of cousins, nieces and nephews and very special Soden Street neighbors.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Maudell Soones' name can be made to St Peter's Episcopal Church Cambridge (Donations, SaintPetersCambridge.org; click on giving)
