Lowell Ward was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of Leroy and Margaret Ward, with southern and Jamaican roots. He was a loving father to LaShell Thompson, brother to Leroy and Linden Ward, Barbara Ward and Lorraine Wolfe, dedicated nephew to Cliff Kennan, proud grandfather of Amaree, SaRayah, Syncere, SaTaaj, Tru, and Tiana and Uncle to Steven, Stephanie, Gregg, Larry, Nicole, and Jasmine.
Lowell was an avid reader, a lover of history and was working to publish his first article, The Peanut Butter & Jelly Demonstration. The article is about the prison protest at MCI Norfolk in1987 that he, fellow Black Panther Doug Miranda, Leroy and Heywood participated in.
Struggling with addiction landed Lowell in and out of prison where he earned his bachelor’s degree from Boston University, a Toastmasters Award for leadership and public speaking, and where he became a peer counselor for people living with HIV/AIDS. He also participated in Politics for the People, a national book club on history & politics from an Independent Perspective.
Once out, Lowell became a Recovery Coach working for various human service agencies in Boston, including The Black Ministerial Alliance and The Dimock Center. He was a hell of a chess player and shared his passion by teaching it to youth.
A true independent, Lowell helped build the MA Coalition of Independent Voters and was a ballot access organizer for the historic presidential campaign of Lenora Fulani in 1992 with fellow organizers in the Boston area. And most recently, he and long-time friend Evelyn Dougherty attended the launch of the Forward Party at the MA State House.
