Lillian Lowe Obituary

Lillian Evans Lowe was born on October 26, 1924, to the late Madeline Barker Evans and Vivian Evans at Brownsville Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. She is survived by her twin, Beryl Evans Carter, of Mattapan, Massachusetts. At a young age, Lillian and Beryl were sent to live with their maternal grandmother in Barbados, after the passing of their mother Madeline. Lillian attended St. Michaels Girls School in Bridgetown, Barbados, where she excelled in her academics.

Lillian returned to the United States in 1960 and after a year in Brooklyn, she settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she was shortly thereafter joined by her late husband Orville Lowe and three of her five children. Lillian began her career working for B.F. Goodridge in Watertown and after the closing of the plant she went on to work as a domestic engineer for the Kaneb and Cross families of Wellesley, until she retired at the age of 73.

Lillian was a long-time member of St. Paul’s AME Church in Cambridge. She served as a steward and missionary of the Crystal Lane Missionary Circle. She also volunteered at the women’s family shelter and food pantry. She dearly loved her church, her church family, and serving the community of Cambridge. She was known for her West Indian cooking - some of her favorites included fish cakes, coconut bread, oxtail stew, and many more island favorites. Lillian was known to receive and host anyone immigrating from Barbados - she had an open-door policy for her fellow Bajans.

Lillian departed this life on Thursday, July 7, 2022. She leaves to cherish her memory: her twin sister Beryl Evans Carter of Mattapan; her daughter Shirley Evans Bonadie of Brooklyn, NY; her son Darcy S. Lowe and daughter-in-law Sandra Garro Lowe of Cambridge; her son St. Clair Lowe and daughter-in-law Rochelle Layne of Medford; her daughter Candace L. Lowe of Milford; and her son Jeffrey D. Lowe of Boston. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Darcelle Lowe Breneus, Darcy Lowe Jr., Sean Lowe, Anthony Lowe, Robert Lowe, Saquora Lowe-McLaurin, Oya Hodges, Shayla Lowe, and Cassandra Lowe. She leaves thirteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Lillian was also Mother and Nana to many - especially the Valverde family of Newtowne Court.
