Lilla M Harris

Lilla Mae (née) Harris, 95, passed away peacefully in the early morning of the 29th of June, 2022 in her home in Cambridge, MA after a 7 month harrowing ordeal with Alzheimer’s Dementia. She was the beloved wife of the late James Henry “Bubba” Harris and is survived by daughter Jeanette R. Harris and son James H. Harris, III. Lilla was born to the late Frank and former spouse Mamie L. (née Woodson) Dew. Later her mother Mamie married George Thomas. Lilla was preceded in death by her grandmother Cora (“MaCora”) and Robert (“PaRobert”) Massengale.

The late Mamie and the late George S Thomas raised Lilla from five years old. Lilla moved to Cambridge from Buena Vista, Georgia when she was fifteen years old. She met Bubba while in high school and married him on September 23, 1949 at the Union Baptist Church in Cambridge. After graduating from high school, Cambridge High and Latin School (CHLS), Lilla’s first employer was New England Confectionary Company in Cambridge, better known as NECCO Candy. She later worked at KLH in Kendall Sq. and then Advent Corporation on Thorndike St., both in Cambridge. After retiring she worked part time as a Home Health Aide.

Lilla had a stroke in August of 2003 and became a permanent wheelchair user. Ironically, she would depend on Home Health Aides for the rest of her life. For several years she continued to be very sociable but never went to a movie again which had been her favorite passtime. Lilla was diagnosed with Dementia in 2013 and began a rapid decline beginning November of 2021. Lilla is now reunited with her husband Bubba, a host of friends and other family members. She will be missed but not forgotten.
