John Mathis Obituary

John David Mathis (J.D.) was born in Buena Vista GA on March 03, 1941 to Bert Mathis and Elizabeth Revonia Freeman. The youngest boy of 4 children, he worked alongside his family as a sharecropper in his hometown while also attending class at the local schoolhouse.

He joined the US Army in Fort Benning at the age of 20 where he held the rank of private. He spent 3 years in the army where he was stationed in Germany as a radio repairman. Through the G.I. Bill, he was able to finish his last 2 years of high school and attended Fisher Junior College where he studied economics.

Upon his discharge from the US Army, he moved to Boston MA where he later met and married Louvenia Dunn. They settled in Cambridge MA and had 4 children that they raised together. He worked as a general laborer for several companies, the last of which was TRW Fasteners.  He later retired at the age of 62 from Somerville Housing as a facilities maintenance worker.

Upon his retirement, he moved back to his hometown of Buena Vista GA where he spent his days tending his garden, planning trips to the casino, and small DIY projects.

He passed from this life on Sunday, April 26, 2026 after a brief stay in hospice care at Magnolia Manor.  He is preceeded in death by his wife, Louvenia (Dunn) Mathis; his brother, Bert Samuel Mathis Jr; and his sister, Mary Lois Love.

He leaves to cherish his memory 2 sons and 2 daughters, John D Mathis Jr (Averil), Louvenia R Mathis (Doc), James L Mathis (Priscilla), and Kimberly A Mathis (Morel); 1 sister, Doris Mathis; 4 stepsons, and a host of grand children, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
