James L Lewis was born on March 4, 1963 in Darling, MS to the late Moses Wade Sr. and Laura Mae (Edwards) Lewis. He was the only son of Laura Mae and one of Moses’ 15 children.
James grew up in Darling, MS and attended Falcon Elementary before moving to Cambridge, MA where he attended the Morse School in grades 7 and 8. He attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. In high school, James enjoyed shop classes and playing football. The skills attained allowed him to work on cars as a hobby and as a mechanic. While in high school James met his wife Robin Hawkins. They share two sons, James and Jermaine. While they were youth, James was always running from game to game coaching & teaching his sons and their peers any and every sport possible.
James worked at Metropolitan State Hospital and Fernald State School until they closed. He then worked at a state run Mental Health Residence. This work suited James as he was very welcoming, kind, thoughtful, and nonjudgmental. Over the years he would bring the clients home for the holidays and take them to his sons’ many sporting events. James was a “Jack of all trades” who liked working with his hands and was very handy with tools. In 2018, James began working with youth at the Perkins School for the Blind.
James loved the Celtics, football, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He was always hyped to attend their games as their “coach”, mentor, and superfan. He also enjoyed visiting his family in Mississippi and Tennessee.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Robin Hawkins; sons: James and Jermaine Lewis(Yohanna). Aunt: Mattie Bennett; Grandchildren: Jeremyah, Yanency, Jamai, Jaylen, and Jacobi Lewis and Angel Reid; Siblings: Moses Jr(Jennifer), Albert(Shun), John Wesley(Nicolla), Lee Lang, Denn William, Bobbie J, Rena, Dorothy, Sandra, and Della Ruth Wade, Sally McNeese(Willie), Debra Cantu(Lucana), Linda Durham(Rodrick), and Eliza Miller; Brother-in-law, Louis Hawkins; Sister-in-law, Carla; Nephew: Andre Benson; Cousins: Ann and Tutie Bennett and Jeremiah and Mattie Washington. He is also survived by a host of other loving cousins, relatives and friends.
Joshua 1:9 (NIRV) Here is what I am commanding you to do. Be strong and brave. Do not be afraid. Do not lose HOPE. I am the Lord your God.
