Inez Mary Salesman peacefully crossed over on Saturday July 20, 2024, at the age of 81. Inez was born in Brighton, Massachusetts to the late Charles and Josephine Salesman. A loving mother to Tonya Banks and Damon Banks and wife Samantha Daniel-Banks. Devoted grandmother to Isaiah Renwick-Banks, Shanice Smith-Banks, Craig Smith Jr., Dezarae Banks and Amaya Banks. Dear aunt to Darroll Salesman, Raquel Salesman, Janique Parrott-Gaffney and CJ Gaffney. Great aunt to Carter Gaffney. Godmother to Alexia Cribbs. Dear sister to the late Stephanie Parrott, Allen Salesman, Joy Salesman, and Guy Salesman. She is also survived by many loving cousins, relatives, dear friends, and colleagues.
Inez was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts and attended the Webster School. She then graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in 1960. She chose to attend Holy Ghost Hospital Nursing Program where she was named class president in 1962. While working full time, Inez also enrolled in Roxbury Community College where she completed her associate degree.
Inez was a very accomplished nurse. She was also a very caring and attentive nurse. All patients under her care appreciated her kind, loving and gentle touch. Over the course of 40 years, although she worked at different medical facilities and nursing homes, she spent most of her career working at Youville hospital. Inez retired in 2011 and once she retired, she dedicated all of time to her supporting and encouraging her five grandchildren.
As a lifelong resident of Cambridge, Inez was a well-known community activist. Not only did she serve as President and Vice President of the Cambridge branch NAACP for several terms; she also helped organize and lead campaigns for City Council and School Committee in Cambridge. Inez was an avid supporter of all public events in Cambridge, and she faithfully attended the multicultural, athletic and sporting events across the city.
Inez loved to cook and she loved to feed her loved ones with her specialty dishes like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato pie and the best apple pie anyone ever tasted. She was born to a Jamaican father and a Portuguese and Bajan mother and raised by strong family-oriented Cape Verdean caregivers. Her rich Caribbean heritage was represented in the foods she blessed family, friends and the larger Cambridge community with. The family door was always open for all to be fed and cared for. Inez was a humble helper, caring soul and a loving presence to all. She will be deeply missed and loved by all forever.
