Frank Bingham Obituary

Francis Lee Bingham (Frank) was born on July 12, 1932, to the late Ruth (Gould) and George Bingham in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He passed away on Monday, June 24, 2024, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, surrounded by family.

The youngest of 9 children, Frank was a lifelong resident of Cambridge. He was educated in Cambridge Public Schools and attended Rindge Technical High School, where he was a 3-letter athlete as a freshman. Frank enjoyed all sports, but his passion was baseball. His high school education was interrupted by his required service, where he spent 4 years in the Army as part of the 272nd Battalion out of Camp Edwards and fought in the Korean War.

Frank met his beloved wife Paula before serving his time in the Army, and after he returned home, he graduated from high school in 1955, and they were married in 1956. Frank and Paula had three children – Lee, Bob, and Rene – and they were a close family, being raised surrounded by the Bingham family brothers, sisters, and cousins. Frank and Paula enjoyed 65 happy years of marriage before Paula passed away in May of 2022.

Frank was trained by the Veterans Administration to be a Machinist, and he worked for Bond Research, MITRE, and MIT Lincoln Lab at Hanscomb AFB for many years, retiring in 1992. During his time at MIT, Frank had the opportunity to be a part of several groundbreaking projects, including the first successful solar-powered irrigation system at the University of Nebraska. Trips to Florida and South Carolina followed, and satellite launches were added to the road trips. Frank enjoyed a wonderful career as a Machinist, which led to his becoming a Shop Supervisor.

Outside of work, Frank was always involved in sports. He played fast pitch softball in the Boston Park League. Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his playing career. He then made a seamless transition into umpiring softball games, which he did for many years. Frank brought several of his Spoiler’s Club teammates into ASA Softball as umpires – his brother Lafe, Charlie Dunn, Harold Nichols, Bill Robinson, and Jack Robertson – all became softball umpires. Frank was also an avid bowler wearing the hats of secretary, treasurer, and president at different times for the Jewelers and ICBL Bowling Leagues of Boston. He continued competing until well into his 70s. Frank organized many bus trips to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, as well as Atlantic City. He enjoyed playing the slot machines and had a knack for getting people together. During his retirement he became fond of scratch tickets and he sure was lucky, or Mr. Lucky, to his grandchildren.

Frank is survived by his son, Robert, and his wife Julia of Somerville; his daughter Rene Taber of Milton; his sisters Ruth Terry of Cambridge; and Ann Evelyn of Belmont. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Lee. Frank also leaves five beloved grandchildren: Nicole, Ashley, Eleanor, Robert Jr., and Olivia; and three great-grandchildren: Addison, Noelle, and Julian Francis; and many other loving family members and friends.
