In Loving Memory of Esther I. Scantlebury
April 14, 1941 – May 10, 2025
It is with heavy hearts, unbelievable sadness and deep sorrow that we, Addison, Karen, Kim, announce the passing of our cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Esther I. Scantlebury, who entered eternal rest on May 10, 2025, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was 84 years old.
Born on the beautiful island of Barbados on April 14, 1941, to Pastor Allan Harris and Marie Harris, Esther lived a life rooted in faith, love, and unwavering devotion to family and community. She married the love of her life, the late Earl Scantlebury, and together they raised three children: Addison, Karen, and Kim. In 1970, Esther and Earl moved their family to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they built a life full of warmth, purpose, and deep connections.
Esther dedicated many years of service as a Dietitian at Tufts Medical Center, where her compassion and care touched countless lives. Beyond her profession, she served as a Lay Minister at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, a role that reflected her spiritual strength and love for her church family. A proud woman of deep faith, Esther believed in ministering to others not only through words but through action — offering prayers, meals, hugs, and wisdom to anyone in need.
Though she was the mother of three biological children, Esther was a mother figure to many — lovingly referred to as having “a billion adopted children and grandchildren.” Her nurturing heart and selfless spirit earned her titles such as the Archbishop of Scantleburyand Queen, known for her grace, humor, and impeccable sense of style. Her fashion was unmatched, and her hair —always flawlessly styled — remained perfect whether it was a Tornado, Hurricane, Rain, Sleet or a Nor’easter Snow Storm. Truly, she was the most stylish and classiest lady one could ever meet.
Esther’s joy was found in the little things: spending precious time with her grandchildren, visiting the elderly and shut-ins, sharing wisdom, spreading laughter, and offering the warmest and best hugs. Her life was a testament to faith, love, and generosity.
She is lovingly survived by her children Addison Scantlebury, Karen Scantlebury, and Kim Scantlebury; her beloved grandchildren Rashard, Taylor, and Blaise; her daughter-in-love, Samantha; her great-grandchild, Blaise, Jr.; her devoted brother, David Harrisof Barbados; and a host of extended family and dear friends both near and far.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband Earl Scantlebury, her parents Pastor Allan and Marie Harris, and many loved ones who now welcome her into glory.
A Homegoing Celebration in Thanksgiving for the Life of Esther I. Scantlebury will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she faithfully worshipped and served.
Esther leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, elegance, and unshakable faith. She was our mother, our queen, our rock — and her memory will live on in all whose lives she touched.
