Derona Bushell Obituary

Derona Hyancinth Bushell was born in Castries, St. Lucia on May 9,1923 to Christiana Joseph Daytes and Josiah Augustus Daytes.
She was the third of Six siblings, Orrinel, Dawson, Meta, Leland, and Oris. Derona attended Canon Laurie Anglican School in St. Lucia. As a young girl Derona moved to Barbados where she met her husband Clement Bushell who proceeded her in death, from that union came five children: Marcella, Brenda, Sandra, Janice, and one who passed away at birth. Derona also had three sons, Stephen, who preceded her in death, Vernon, and Terrance. She travelled to the United States where she attended School of Cosmetology, after her graduation from Cosmetology School she returned to Barbados where She opened her own Beauty Salon. Derona sure had a traveling Spirit. She Travelled to London England where she became a Nurses assistant and later sent for her husband Clement to join her. After a couple of years in England, she travelled back to Barbados, but then her American family encouraged her to come to America. In 1966 She travelled to America where she worked for a Senator in New Jersey. In 1968, she sent for her daughters, who migrated to New York and then to Cambridge, Massachusetts where they all settled. Derona got a job with Polaroid and worked there from 1969 until 1988 when she retired. After retirement she went back to work as a Foster Grandparent which she enjoyed working with the kids. Derona had such a sense of humor and loved to sing. We would hear her singing lots of her favorites song. Derona liked to stay busy and was always trying new things. One of them was going to Culinary School, where she would bring back some of the dishes she made and share with the family which was enjoyed by all. Derona also had lots of hobbies like Knitting and crocheting. She made many things like dolls, hats, and blankets for her family and loved ones. She loved doing Crossword and Word Search puzzle books and truly enjoyed receiving phone calls and visits from the Fontellio family.

Derona was preceded in death by her granddaughter Janel Clarke, and leaves behind to mourn her sister Meta Fontellio, her daughters Marcella Robinson, Brenda Clarke, Sandra Bushell, Janice Bushell, her sons Terrance Daytes and Vernon Edmunds, her grandchildren Michael Clarke, James Robinson, Christopher Clarke, Raphael Clarke, Aliya Smith, Alfredo Brown, Zafir Corum, Tyrell Smith, Steven Daytes, Sasha Daytes McLeod, Michael Daytes, Dennis Daytes, and Sarah Edmunds, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews, and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Derona was a very loving, spiritual and giving person. She was the matriarch of the family and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
