Charles L. Scoby Sr. Of Brockton, MA passed away on Sunday July 21, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 18, 1959 to Victoria Belle McCarthy of Cambridge, MA and James Scoby Sr. of Champaign, Illinois. As part of a family of 6 children, Charles was the youngest. Though he may have been the “baby brother” he was not one to be treated like the baby, pushed around, or stepped over. He certainly never minced words, always letting you know where he stood and what he thought of you (especially if you dare say anything negative about his beloved NY Yankees or NY Knicks!). If he didn’t like you; you knew it, but if he did like you there was a bond created that could never be broken. Even at 5 ft. 6 in. you’d swear he was 7 feet tall by the way he conducted business and carried himself.
Even more defining than his direct nature was his giant and tender heart. He was and will forever be known for his innate sense of altruism. Whenever someone was in need; “Chuck”, “Chucky”, “Scooby Doo”, “Chuck-A-Luck”, or “Cap” as he was affectionately known to many, would be the first one there to help. If you needed help moving, he’d be there. If you needed help moving; and his back or shoulder were blown out, he’d still be there. If you were broke and he couldn’t give you the money in his wallet, he’d make sure you were fed and still give you the shirt off his back. Always loving, always selfless, never asking for anything in return. That was the essence of Charles L. Scoby Sr.
Aside from his big heart he was also a man of discipline and hard work. From an early age he always worked for what he had and never asked for a handout. A 1978 graduate of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, Charles would go on to work as a Housekeeping Manager and Security Guard for the next 8 years. In 1986 he entered his career in law enforcement with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and never looked back. Charles went on to eventually retire with the SCSD as Captain in 2015. No matter how far removed; former employees and inmates alike, everyone remembered Charles. Exemplary in many things, Charles set the bar high with the Sheriff’s Department. His peers and subordinates alike all looked up to Charles and would strive to be just like “Captain Scoby”; no matter how unattainable that seemed. He never asked anyone to do anything he wouldn’t do himself, never showed up late, never left early, never called out sick, worked late and holidays to cover for others, and always gave 100% of himself.
Charles leaves to celebrate his life his beloved, devoted wife Sonja B. Scoby; who he also called “Babe”. She never left his side. Charles was also married to the late Dianne C. Scoby and from that union left behind to carry Charles’ legacy are his children Tyrone, Charles Jr., Victoria, Jessica Jean; his grandchildren (who affectionately knew him as “Grampe/Dad”) Jevon, Tyler, Kyliana, Nathaniel, Jaelyn, Adon, and Miles. In addition, Charles’ was, is, and will forever be loved by his siblings; (the late) Vickie Jones, James Scoby Jr., Valerie Scoby, Robert Scoby, and Constance Peek, his Aunt Gail Bishop, his in-laws the late Charles Postell, the late Saundra Graham, the late Don Postell, the late Val Postell, sisters-in-law Martha Postell, Marlene Crawford, Cheryl Headley, Sharon Freeman, Sheila Headley-Burwell, and her husband Cleveland Burwell, brothers-in-law Shawn Headley, Kevin, in-laws Pamela Sneed Cook, Emmanuel-Lewis Robert Sneed Sr., Emmanda Marie Sneed-Pauleus, the entire Sneed family, and a whole host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, and loved ones.
