The Life and Legacy of Booker T. Johnson

On March 8, 2025, Booker Taliaferro Johnson was called into the presence of the Almighty King. He leaves behind a rich legacy of love, hard work, and faith that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Early Life

Booker was born on July 9, 1948, in Linden, Alabama, to the late Pearly and Willie Johnson Sr. He was one of eight children: Eloise Tucker (deceased), Asilee Warren (Mack Clinton, deceased), Bessie Crowder, Bessie Burpo (deceased), Mattie Johnson (deceased), Hattie Walker, and Willie Johnson (Carmen Johnson, deceased). Growing up in Linden during the Civil Rights era, Booker developed an early love for sports, excelling in both football and basketball. A standout athlete, he set several records and dreamed of a career in professional sports. However, his path led him to Selma University, where he balanced academics, athletics, and faith.

Relocation to Boston and Family Life

It was at Selma University where Booker met the love of his life, Annette Hamilton. After graduation, they married and moved to Boston, where they built a life together. In the mid-to-late 1960s, seeking greater opportunities, Booker—like many African Americans—relocated to Boston. He followed his older siblings, who had already moved North, and quickly found his place in the city.

Together, they raised three children: Jennifer Johnson-Galvez of Boston, MA, Marcus Johnson (Nancy Johnson) of Beverly, MA, and Bernard Johnson (Jessica Cruz-Johnson) of Everett, MA. Booker was also a proud and devoted grandfather to Niare Galvez, Khari Johnson, Jelani Galvez, Esai Johnson, Linah Johnson, Michael Galvez Jr., and Jarron Cook.

Career and Entrepreneurial Spirit

Booker’s career spanned several decades, beginning with over 30 years at Polaroid Corporation, where he rose through the ranks to supervise teams in the company’s pioneering work in instant photography. His dedication earned him certifications in Square Format Data Acquisition Systems and Polaroid Total Quality Ownership Awareness. In the 1970s, Booker co-founded Unity Cleaning Co., a commercial cleaning business that secured contracts with grocery stores and office buildings. After retiring from Polaroid, he spent 12 years in the facilities department at Boston University, where he contributed to campus maintenance and operation

Even after retiring from Boston University in 2014, Booker remained deeply engaged in the passions that had defined his life. He was especially devoted to encouraging his grandchildren’s education, sharing his love for reading and math, and inspiring them to strive for excellence. Booker took great pride in watching his oldest grandkids attend top universities. His commitment to family never wavered—he supported his grandsons' athletic pursuits, stayed active himself, and was always a steadfast presence in his church community.

Legacy

Booker’s legacy is one of love, faith, and perseverance. A man of vision, warmth, and dedication, he built a strong foundation for his family and was passionate about encouraging his grandchildren to pursue their education and passions. He firmly believed that knowledge was the key to unlocking opportunities and inspired his family to always strive for excellence.

A devoted member of Western Avenue Baptist Church, Booker found strength and guidance in his faith and community. He touched many lives with his kindness, work ethic, and competitive spirit. Though Booker is no longer with us, his impact will continue to guide and inspire all who knew him.

Booker’s memory will live on in the hearts of his wife, Annette, their children, grandchildren, and countless family and friends, including his beloved church family. His words, “Life is a target — aim for it,” will resonate as a reminder of the power of vision, hard work, and dedication.

Rest in Power, Booker. You will be greatly missed, but your legacy will endure
