Obituary

Barbara Mamie Warrington Karp was born on February 13, 1934 to Leon Gardner Warrington and Phoebe Eaton Warrington from Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of three siblings; always referring to herself as the baby of the family. She was born in Cambridge and for a period resided in Lexington where she attended Lexington High School.

As a young adult, Barbara left the comfort of her mother’s home and forged ahead to find and establish her own identity. Barbara had a very active social life. She enjoyed developing relationships and memorable moments; she loved to live, having countless stories of all the great events that took place in Boston in the late 50s and 60s. A night life that thrived back then, in her words “they called Boston little New York” because of all the notable acts that came to perform during that era. From James Brown to Ray Charles, she was there. She loved the music and loved to dance.

If anyone knew Barbara, they would know her core resolve was a balance of compassion for others, yet strong and independent; always understanding and upholding her value and self-dignity. Barbara loved life and had an infectious spirit; never striving for attention; attention naturally gravitated to her. She loved big and was adored by all.

Making a life for herself in, and around, the city of Boston, Barbara worked as a waitress at different establishments and later became a seamstress in Boston’s famous garment district for many years in the 1960s. Unfortunately, employment opportunities increasingly became scarce. The economics changed for the garment industry and rendered apparel manufacturing in Boston obsolete.

In the early sixties, Barbara married Melvin Karp. Their marriage would not endure for a lifetime; however, she ultimately gave life to, two beautiful children: Melody and Stephen. Barbara would eventually confess and demonstrate her belief in Jesus, being baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church on July 1, 2001.

Barbara Mamie Warrington Karp of Boston Ma., residing at 44 John Eliot Sq., (Roxbury) for over 21 years, was called home to be with the Lord on July 10, 2022. Barbara was eighty-eight years of age and had a very determined personality. She fought valiantly against her comorbidities associated with aging and through the COVID 19 pandemic of 2020. Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved mother and father Phoebe and Leon G. Warrington Sr. Her two brothers: Leon Warrington Jr., and Ralph Warrington Sr. Barbara is survived by her two children: Melody (William) Hopkins and Stephen Leon Warrington. Her six grandchildren: Ashley (Wesnaiska) Francois, Stephanee (Joshua) Jackson, Alecia Holt, Marcus Holt, Matthew Holt, and Savannah Warrington. Her great granddaughter Zaniah Francois, her half-sister Iris Walker and nieces Jacqueline, Cecilia, and nephew Ralph Jr. And of course, a great host of relatives, friends and Yoda, her beloved cat.
