Barbara Elizabeth Brathwaite (Carter), 95, of Cambridge, MA, passed away on January 1, 2025.
Barbara was born in Boston on September 29, 1929, and was raised in Cambridge, where she spent most of her life. She was the beloved matriarch of her family and leaves behind her children: Jean E. Younger (Carl), William J. Brathwaite Jr. (Constance), Cheryl E. Brathwaite, and Valerie E. Brathwaite (Gus Martins).
Barbara was also a proud grandmother to five grandchildren: Jessica E. Younger, Angela E. Morrison (Nathan), Laura E. Brathwaite (Matthew Pellegrino), Paolo A. Martins, and Sofia E. Martins. She is also survived by other loving family members and many dear friends.
Barbara was a cherished educator, having dedicated many years as a schoolteacher for the city of Cambridge. She touched the lives of countless students, who continue to remember her fondly to this day. Barbara was a long time and devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church, where her profound faith played a central role in her life.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Brathwaite Sr., who passed away in 2018. The family takes great comfort knowing that Barbara is now reunited with her soulmate.
A wake will be held on Wednesday, January 8, from 4 to 7 p.m., and a funeral service will take place on Thursday, January 9, at 10 a.m., both at St. James Episcopal Church, 1170 Broadway, Somerville, MA.
Barbara not only influenced the lives of her students, but also touched the hearts of everyone around her with her wisdom, patience, and extraordinary kindness. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
