Celebrating the Life of
Anthony “Tony” Rudolf DePadwa Clarke
August 23, 1936 - July 12, 2023
Anthony Rudolf DePadwa Clarke was born in St. Sylvans Village, St. Joseph, Barbados, West Indies on August 23, 1936 to the union of Vesta (Nicholls) and George Elliot Clarke.Anthony, known to some as Rudy, Tony, or Dol, grew up in Sugar Hill with his five siblings. As a young man, he took care of his grandmother and worked as a bus driver for the Barbados Transport Board. After Barbados declared its independence in 1966, Rudy was among the first generation to immigrate to the United States in pursuit of greater opportunity. He audaciously chased the American dream and paved the way for many others. Rudy was hardworking, playful, gregarious and generous. He worked for many years as a carpenter at MIT and enjoyed life-long friendships with fellow co-workers and staff. As a self-made man, he did a little bit of everything: carpentry, electrical work, car repair, and locksmithing. It wasn’t unusual for him to be in the middle of a home improvement project. His ingenuity was not limited to home renovation; he was a “jack-of-all-trades.” Rudy was selfless and went out of his way to help othersDuring his final months, Rudy was blessed to receive care and support from Benchmark Senior Living in Hanover, MA and Norwell Visiting Nurse Association.
Rudy leaves to cherish his memory: his siblings: Victor “Coursey” Clarke (Merlene), Princess Horton (Joe), and Hazel Bell (Billy); his children: Cheryl “Sandra” Walton of Barbados, and Anthony Clarke Jr.(Milena) of Malden; his stepchildren: Juliette Mayers (Darryl) of Norwell, Maxcene Latin (Tyrone) of Boston, and Susan Archer (Stephen) of Lynn. His grandchildren Jonnelle Cumberbatch, Darrian Walton, Melina Clarke, D’Anna Mayers Ibiloye, Danielle Mayers, Christina Latin, Angelina Latin, Victor Latin, Langston Archer, Marin Archer, Camille Archer, and Preston Archer; his great grandchildren: Jai Connell, Janiya Connell; and special friend, Sheila Henry of Boston along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Evelyn (Bascomb) Clarke, sister Marjorie Nicholls and brother Frank Clarke.
