I am sorry I can't be with you all tonight: Latoya has been much on my mind since I very recently learned that she had passed. I have one particularly vivid memory of Latoya as a student in my "Writing Workshop"class, in which she worked so hard to become a better writer--and did!!! We were reading David Ferry's poem, "The Guest Ellen at the Supper for Street People." After many of her classmates spoke of Ellen's suffering, Latoya spoke of the many ways the poet dignified Ellen, gently and respectfully raising her and her situation out of invisibility. We all learned from her that day.

Sending my prayers to all of the Reddicks, many of whom of I know personally; may your memories of Latoya comfort you.
